Color me unsurprised

Really? In a straw poll, McCain would beat Hillary in '08? Who would have guessed it? Everyone? Yeah...you're probably right.

Zogby has McCain whupping Hillary 54% to 35% and trouncing Kerry 55% to 35%. It even has McCain beating the Dems by 10 points in states Kerry won in '04. Comedy. James Joyner suspects that if it really was McCain v Hillary, the media's love for McCain would disappear:
The media love McCain because he grants them lots of access and is willing to go against his fellow Republicans time and again. That makes him a "straight shooter" and a "maverick." That's fine when it's McCain against other Republicans. I guarantee that, if there's a McCain-Clinton matchup in the 2008 general election, the press will discover that McCain is actually a right wing extremist religious zealot who hates women, the poor, and minorities.
Not so funny is the continued affirmation of how terrible the President's and Congress' numbers are. Worse than the terrible approval ratings are the Excellent/Poor splits. Today the President stands at 15/34. When he had just a 46% approval in June '04 (today it is historically low at 44%), that split was 19/33. That would imply, to my untrained mind, that even the faithful are getting anxious. Even in Red States today, it is 17/29.

Of course, Congress' E/P split is terrible 2/24. I suppose that's not too bad considering the overall approval rating for Congress is just 26%. I can really feel the love.
